How I Got Rid Of My PMS
What is PMS?
PMS is short for the medical term "Premenstrual Syndrome". The condition itself is characterized by a set of symptoms which begin anywhere between 7-3 days before your period. These symptoms are nasty, vicious, demonized symptoms which can seriously affect your mood and attitude during that time of the month. The funny thing about PMS is, once you start bleeding, your symptoms normally dissapear. However, for those 3-7 days, it can feel like your world is ending.
Another very common symptom is acne. It can feel like the end of the world when you begin feeling like your body is been taken over by Satan himself. You lack energy, focus, have no interest in doing anything at all except curling up in bed and crying (preferably with a tub of B&J). My PMS symptoms only started a year into my relationship with my boyfriend CJ, and man was he in for a shock! Some days I would just cry for no reason, I would be in a mood for days, I would scoff my face with all sorts of junk food in a desperate attempt to make myself feel better. But guess what? This is not normal. This condition is not part of your 'normal cycle' - this is a huge problem and is a major sign of hormonal imbalance. You do not have to put up with this for the rest of your life.
If you did, and you live to the age of 80 years old, you will spend on average 7,280 days suffering with PMS symptoms. Is it really worth it?
How did I manage to eradicate my symptoms?
Long story short folks, I really made a huge effort to balance my hormones naturally. 12 months ago I came off the pill, and my PMS symptoms were worse than they've ever been. MY acne was raging, my mood-swings were uncontrollable, I felt depressed and sad and lonely for those horrible 7 days every month. In a desperate act to save my hormones and sanity. I decided to change my diet for the better and went low-carb, high fat. I also stopped drinking alcohol for a month and supplemented with zinc, cod liver oil, vitamin D and turmeric capsules. I can't pin point just one reason for my fantastic health right now, but I feel switching to a real food diet, including grass-fed,pasture raised eggs, meat, dairy and lots of vegetables was really a game changer for me. I stopped eating any kind of sugar, even foods that break down as sugar such as bread, pasta, and even fruit. (I still eat blueberries and strawberries as they are low in sugar!).
After 3 months of doing this consistently, my PMS symptoms slowly but surely got better every month. This month I'm on month 4 (I started this in January). And guess what, its 3 days before my period anddddddd... No PMS at all! No grumpy Beth, no mood-swings, no stressed out boyfriend, no over-consumption of greasy, sugary foods and no depression. Plus, where my periods would normally last 7 days, they now last around 4 days from start to finish which is just absolutely wonderful for my "period fund" - all hail period financial savings! Woo.
